Curiosities about pet rabbit
Over the last decades, the characteristics of the pet rabbits have made several families discover the joy of sharing their routines with these animals.
It has therefore been easy for the rabbits to win the love of families.
Small and docile, rabbits are affectionate and fun animals. They like to be pampered, cared for and played with. Sometimes they can also be very stubborn and temperamental.
We have selected some curiosities about these pets:
1 – RABBITS ARE NOT RODENTS
Contrary to what many may think, rabbits are not rodents. In fact, in physiological terms they are much more like horses than rats.
2 – TEETH AND NAILS GROW A LOT
The rabbits’ nails and teeth do not stop growing. It is advisable to cut the nails of your rabbit at least twice a year (every six months). As far as the growth of the teeth is concerned,chewing is what allows them to wear them out,however,you can wear them out with wooden toys. If they are not properly worn out the rabbit can have health problems and stop eating,since overgrown teeth can make it difficult to eat.
3 – RABBITS SHOULD NOT TAKE A BATH
Rabbits are a type of animal which clean themselves like cats and are therefore very hygienic. When doing their own hygiene they do not need their tutors to give them a bath,however if they do they should do it carefully so that the rabbit is not scared. You can also dry wash it with rabbit specific shampoo.
4 – THE RABBITS PURR
Once again, like cats, pet rabbits also purr and grind their teeth when they are happy or need to be caressed, this gesture being a form of communication.
5 – CAN GET BORED
In its natural space the rabbit is an active and constantly moving animal. In captivity the rabbit needs attention and to be stimulated to play and exercise. Without this stimulus one can become bored at the risk of becoming obese and consequently sick.
6 – DO ACROBATICS
It is common for rabbits to jump and do stunts when they are happy. Just like dogs, rabbits turn belly up and ask you to cuddle them and cuddle them. As a rule rabbits only show this kind of behavior when a strong relationship of trust is established.
7 – THEY HAVE A PANORAMIC VIEW
Rabbits have excellent senses of smell, hearing and sight. With about 360º vision, they have a panoramic view that allows them to detect predators in all directions, even in their rear. Their visual field has only one blind spot, which is in front of their face. To overcome this deficiency, this animal has nose hair capable of detecting anything by smell.
8 – THE EARS SERVE FOR MORE THAN HEARING
Although the rabbits’ ears can rotate at 270 degrees, which allows them to detect any threats that may be approaching you, their function is not exclusive to hearing. The ears also serve the purpose of cooling the rabbits on the hottest days.
9 – ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN
It is frequent that because it is a cute animal it is associated with children, however, rabbits are not good pets for the younger ones. This recommendation is due to the fact that rabbits are delicate animals which do not like to be held or handled and can easily try to escape from the arms of a child with good intentions. A rabbit?s back can also fracture as a result of improper handling.
10 – ARE SEXUALLY PRECOCIOUS AND ACTIVE
This pet is known for its early maturity. They reproduce very easily and quickly, and the female has, on average, eight puppies per litter and, as soon as she weans, she can become pregnant again.
The gestation period of a rabbit varies from 28 to 34 days and the young leave the nest and start to eat solid food with 18 days of life. This way if you are thinking of having a pet rabbit or if you already have one you should avoid joining couples if you don?t want to have more rabbits at home.
11 – RECALLS
There are some records of rabbits which are unknown to many, namely the fact that the rabbit can:
- To reach a speed of 55 km/h;
- Jump up to 1 meter high or 3 meters long;
- Have litters of more than 8 puppies. The biggest registered litter was 24 puppies and it has already happened at least twice in the world;
- In the Guinness Book the largest rabbit in the world measured 1.23m and weighed about 20kg.
12 – CHINESE ZODIAC
The rabbit is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. It represents grace, kindness, sensitivity, compassion, and love.
